McCain/Palin - the best ticket available?!

We have a lot of issues to consider, at this time, with respect to who will give us the best opportunity for success in our Country and on the World stage; McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden. I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is the best choice for the following reasons:

McCain:
1. He has experience. While some might say that because he's been in government for decades that he's just one in the good-ole-boy network, his record shows that he's been against the mainstream on many issues (some I agree with and some I don't) and he stands behind his convictions.
2. He has integrity. He will do what he believes is the correct thing even when nobody is looking. His honor and unwavering devotion to his fellow man was made clear during his captivity. Nuf said.
3. He has shown that it is not his way or the highway. With his immigration stance, he changed his stance (call it flip-flopping if you will) to fall in line with what the majority of Americans want and admitted it. In my opinion, this shows his willingness to perform for the people.
4. His national security stance is unmatched by Obama. McCain, I believe, would know when the time for talk has passed. I don't believe he would plead to tyrants over and over again while they overtly defy World order and kick sand in the face of righteousness. Simply stated, I believe he will put a boot in the ass of somebody when the time comes.
5. Palin may not have a ton of experience, but she has more than Obama. She's a fresh face to an old crowd in Washington and I believe she will mix things up a bit there.
6. I like Palin's pro-life views and I believe she has a strong and independent mind.
7. I believe that McCain and Palin will surround themselves with smart and practical people, and I believe that given all of the advice and information from those smart and practical people that they would make better decisions for our country than Obama and Biden would.
8. I believe under McCain/Palin, our military will be gainfully employed. Not because I'm a war-monger but because I believe a strong defense is essential to our survival.

Anyway, that's how I feel. Any comments?

Good post, Brian. I pretty much agree with you right down the line. Having said that, though, should Senator Obama win in November, I am determined to give him my full support. Do you realize that none of your kids can remember a time when political rhetoric wasn't at a pro wrestling level of hyper-partisanship?

I don't give any elected official full support. In every case, the idea outweighs the official. If he backs legislation for abortion on demand, for instance, I will not support it. If he wants to invade Iran with good cause, I will support it.

1. Experience is fine, but I think it's a bit overrated. Education and perspective are at least as important, at least in my view. McCain gives me the same feeling as Bush--I'm just not sure he's intelligent enough for me to have confidence in his ability.
2. I think integrity is a wash. McCain and Obama are both very good men. (I do have a great deal of respect for what McCain went through in his captivity, but technically he did waiver. It's his biggest regret in his life.)
3. I'm not sure if this is a virtue or a vice. The Constitution was written to restrain the majority, not to empower it.
4. Why do you believe that Obama would "plead to tyrants over and over"? He's never said anything like that, nor has he intimated it. There is a time when boots should be put in asses, and I think Obama would recognize that time as well or better that McCain. I think showing the world that we don't think with our boots would be helpful in some situations. We've lost most of the respect of the world, and we need to get it back. You don't do that with boots alone.
5. She's an idiot. There is no more precise way to say it.
6. I prefer the Constitution's privacy views, prevention instead of head-in-the-sand attitudes about sexual education. I also can't believe that "pro-lifers" would refuse an exception for a mother's health in late-term abortion rules. It's a complicated issue, and there's no perfect solution to the problems that are created by either stance, but I'm generally put off by the attitudes on both sides towards each other.
6a. Strong mind? Are we talking about the same person?
7. Why not just elect smart and practical people? Then they could surround themselves with more smart and practical people, and we'd have a net gain of 2 smart and practical people.
8. No matter who's President, out military is going to be gainfully employed. Nobody wants to weaken our country. Education is the key to our national security, and I think Obama is more committed to that.

I think if he could, McCain would send Palin back to Alaska in a heartbeat. It was a nice spike for a while, but as people get to know her the shine is fading.

I think political rhetoric was always as intense as it is now. It just wasn't on TV. Look at the Lincoln/Douglas debates. Heck--look at Adams and Jefferson, etc. Perhaps they had a little more respect for each other for a little while, but not much.

1. Fair enough...that's your opinion.
2. "But technically he did waiver" explain please?
3. The constitution was written to provide guidance for governing this great nation through time. It provides checks and balances, and it outlines channels for making change. Past immigration (legal or not)is what made this country great. Current day immigration must be done in a legal and controlled fashion to help keep this country safe. There are arguments and extenuating circumstances in just about everything, but there must be some pretty strict rules on this.
4. You can spin my comments however you want, but what I said with respect to McCain was "I don't believe he would plead with tyrants over and over again while they overtly defy World order and kick sand in the face of righteousness." In fact, in that paragraph my only mention of Obama was that I feel McCain's stance on National Security is unmatched by Obama. If and when I have a comment about Obama, it'll either be a substantiated opinion or I'll outline it and back it up with facts.
5. Your comment on Palin was real insightful. Why don’t you tell us how you really feel? Better yet, how about illustrating for us how an “idiot” (by definition “a person lacking professional skill”) could obtain the professional accolades that she has? How about explaining how an “idiot” (by definition “an uneducated or ignorant person”) can, by all accounts, perform at the level she does not only as a Governor, but as a Mother and a generally concerned U.S. citizen. Can you give us any basis for your opinion? Otherwise, your comment “She’s an idiot. There is no more precise way to say it.” falls smack dab in the middle mindless gibberish.
6. I’ll agree with you that it is a complicated issue. In the end, we each have a responsibility to do what’s right. We will all be held accountable for our actions at final judgment.
7. How smart and practical is this john? Mr. Calvin, I admire the fact that you’ve had the drive, motivation and determination to put yourself through years of hard work and schooling to make something for yourself. Now that you’ve paid back your student loans with your hard earned money, developed your own law firm and made hundreds of thousands of dollars for yourself, I think it’s time we spread your wealth to those who haven’t had the drive, motivation, or determination to do better for themselves…it’s only fair. I’m sorry, what did you ask? How much of your money do I want to give to others who may not deserve it but in my opinion need it? Well, that’s not really important is it? The point is that it’s not fair that you should have all that money while Mr. and Mrs. Blues over here don’t have as much. It doesn’t matter what the circumstances of their situation are, haven’t you ever heard that saying “from each according to their ability, to those according to their need”? What? Did you say that’s Socialistic? No way, it’s just fair!
8. What are you eluding to here? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Obama wants everybody to have access to higher education…college…probably at taxpayer expense. My opinion is education through high school should be provided to all, but beyond that you’re on your own. College is a privilege, not a right. Make people earn their way in and they’re much more likely to appreciate it and make it work for them.

2. Like I said, I don't have anything but respect for McCain for his service. What I meant was, when he was tortured, he broke. He was very upset about it, and it's his biggest regret in his life (at least that's what he said.) I would have broken too, so I'm not criticizing. I was just question the choice of words.

3. I don't necessarily disagree that immigration controls need to be in place. My disagreement was with the notion that doing what the majority wants is a good thing. The Constitution was set up to restrain the majority from just getting what they want. (I'll find you the Federalist Paper that talks about it if you want--it's very interesting.)

4. I wasn't spinning anything. You appeared to be contrasting Obama with McCain. If not, mea culpa.

5. How did she become the mayor of a town with 10 people? Who cares? That's not a big enough sample size for anyone to take anything away from it. How did she become governor of Alaska? She backed into it. The time was ripe for her particular message. I didn't say she wasn't a good broadcaster--just that she's an idiot. It's not hard for sportscasters to get people to like them, but that doesn't mean Stuart Scott isn't an idiot.

a. She doesn't believe in evolution.

b. She thinks polar bears should be taken off the endangered species list because the polar ice caps aren't melting.

c. Question: Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
Sarah Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

Umm, Sarah? The Pledge wasn't around until 100 years after the Founding Fathers, and it wasn't recognized by the US government until the 40's. And Ike added the words "under God" in 1954. Nice job, though. (And don't bring up the "In God We Trust" on the money. That hasn't been around very long either.)

d. Pray away the gay? Seriously?

Do you want more? I wouldn't even want her to be head of my school board, let alone VP.

6. Religious argument.

7. "I think it’s time we spread your wealth to those who haven’t had the drive, motivation, or determination to do better for themselves"? Is that really all they're lacking? It's just drive, motivation, or determination? What helped you turn your life around? Me? Rick? We have a great family, lots of support, and lots of luck, and we barely avoided tragedy. You can't begin to know (or maybe you can) how grateful I am not to be in jail or dead.

And that doesn't even begin to address mental and physical differences. We are not all equal. If I get to the point where I am making enough money for my taxes to go up, I will count myself fortunate, and I will gladly watch my money go to help someone who needs it.

I admit it's been a while since I've read the bible, but I seem to remember Jesus telling people to give up their goodies and follow him. And the thing about not worshiping false idols? Money is a tool, and I'm not attached enough to mine not to want it to go where it can do some good. There are people less fortunate than me. If I won't help them in person, at least I can help someone else do it for me. (And I'm not even Christian?)

8. I'm alluding to the fact that education is our most important priority right now, but people would rather bitch about higher taxes than to invest in our minds. Meet some Chinese or Indian people some time, realize how much better educated they are, and then ask me why our jobs are going to them.

Yes, our military is an important tool. If we're too stupid to be able to use it right, it's not going to be very effective. It's not a matter of "privilege" or "right." If we don't get more people through college, our country is going to fall. It's not our enemies that will kill us--it's the fact that we can't find them on a frikkin' map.

Do my scholarships really make me appreciate this less? If I didn't have them, I wouldn't be here. I think I appreciate it just fine.
